TRAFFIC SCHOOL: Lessons from the Sea

There are indeed "plenty of fish in the sea" however unless you are actively fishing, every day, you will likely go hungry... The same is true on the Internet. Just about everyone (Google says 97%) is using the Internet to find products and services. Having a website is just the beginning: you have a boat. Now let's take a few lessons from the sea to see how to make the boat work for you.

"Have the right bait." If you are fishing for new customers, use the keywords they are using, provide the information they are seeking, entice them with the solution to their problem. Sometimes you have to change up your presentation to match their situation.

"Work the lure." What works best is when you can attract attention and engage interest. You will get very few "bites" by appearing dead (unless you are seeking scavengers). Posting fresh information and updates will make you more appealing.

"Go where the fish are." Where is your target market hanging out? LinkedIn? Google? MeetUp? Knowing your demographic and where they frequent will save you time and effort by giving you the best return-on-investment.

"Teamwork works." You can go it alone but you'll likely get better results with an experienced team of professionals by your side. Also, if you work with businesses that can all benefit from your joint efforts you can reduce your efforts and maximize results. These might be professionals with the same target market as you (but that offer different services) or businesses in the same shopping complex.
